Chapter Ten

Stella wanted to spit. Screaming and stamping feet might help but she no longer had saliva, and standing upright took all her strength. Justin had rescued her, come when she needed him desperately and she'd acted like a horse's patootie.

She walked into the kitchen and picked up the phone to call him and apologize but her mind was too fogged and confused to remember the number and the thought of lifting and opening the phone book made her shoulders ache more than they did already. Justin was right, she had to rest, but she also needed some answers. Summoning her last dregs of brain energy, she scribbled a note to Dixie to please wake her before picking Sam up from the sitter. They had to talk.

Finding a magnet to stick the note to the fridge took more energy than Stella imagined possible. She made in upstairs and into her room on all fours, and with her last vestiges of strength, dragged herself onto her bed. Sleep came as swiftly as a slammed door.

"Good morning, Vlad. To what do I owe this pleasure?" How could Kit be so cordial? Vlad Tepes was just about the last person, living or undead, that Justin felt like seeing right now, but the man stood by Kit's gate, obviously waiting for them.

"Marlowe, Corvus." Vlad smiled and inclined his head.

Justin offered a curt nod. "Vlad." Whether he thought of Gwyltha or the two ghouls, this creature was a world menace.

"Dixie gave me your message," Kit said. "We'll expect Gwyltha on Saturday."

Vlad gave another nod of acknowledgement. "I felt certain she would but, as I said the other evening, I come on another matter. I wonder if I might presume to ask a considerable favor of you and your mate."

"I question what I can do for you, Vlad," Kit said with just a suspicion of sarcasm.

Vlad chose not to rise to that. "I can explain here if you wish."

Justin was hoping Kit would take him up on the offer to spill his demands right here on the brick pavement, and then get lost. Before Kit could reply, Dixie opened the front door and called, "Are y'all going to debate out there on the sidewalk or come inside?"

Vlad actually had the grace to hesitate, his eyes on Kit, waiting for him to ask him in. Or maybe he was reluctant to take on the two of them despite Dixie's invitation.

Kit shrugged. "If we need to talk, let's go inside. No point in standing out here all morning."

Was it only morning? It seemed at least a decade since Justin received Stella's desperate summons. He was not disposed to cope with Vlad's impositions, if there was a way to gracefully back out. He couldn't. Minutes later they were all seated in the front parlor. Vlad, Justin noticed with a wry smile, avoiding the gas logs as much as he did himself, their caution landing them side by side on the sofa.

"I will not intrude long," Vlad said, the necessary niceties over.
